Gemma Repiso-Puigdelliura

Dr. Gemma Repiso-Puigdelliura is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics & Languages at McMaster University. She obtained her PhD in Hispanic Languages at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2022. Her doctoral project was funded by a Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant from the US National Science Foundation Linguistics Program. Her research is at the intersection of the phonetic/phonological system of bilingual speakers and phonetic variation in simultaneous and sequential bilingualism.

Dr. Repiso-Puigdelliura’s work poses the question of how early bilingual phonological grammars are organized in a bilingual speaker’s mind. She approaches this question by taking developing approaches to investigate whether the observed heritage speakers’ profiles are a result of attrition or whether they result from early grammar interaction extending into adulthood. In order to answer this question, her work also sheds light on the grammatical and extra grammatical factors that affect phonetic and phonological variation in bilingual grammars. She has examined the roles of amount of exposure, use, type of parental input, and lexical proficiency in the production of the two languages of these bilingual speakers.

Furthermore, Dr. Repiso-Puigdelliura is currently collaborating on projects pertaining to rule application in code-switching and phonological acquisition of third languages.
