We would like to invite you to our first ARiEAL Brown Bag event! The idea behind the Brown Bag series is to provide our trainees and faculty members a casual setting where they can present and workshop “work-in-progress” – thesis, dissertation, and book chapters, articles, or conference papers – for some constructive feedback from our team at ARiEAL.
Our first guest is Gemma Repiso Puigdelliura, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Languages, who will present a practice talk titled “The Production of Spanish Rhotics by Spanish Heritage Speakers: Variation and Development.” This event will take place at LRW 4001 (across the hall from ARiEAL) on Wednesday, 12 October, at 12:30-1:30pm.
Don’t forget your lunches!
Presentation Abstract: In Spanish, rhotics are among the last acquired sounds. Heritage bilinguals, who are simultaneously exposed to a family language (i.e., heritage language) and a majority language, exhibit deceleration in rhotic development and high rates of output variation during adulthood. This talk discusses the role of exposure to heritage Spanish in the production of rhotics and examines rates of development across child heritage speakers of different ages.
