The Reading Lab led by ARiEAL Researcher, Dr. Victor Kuperman, will be hosting a talk by Dr. Natalia Slioussar, School of Linguistics, Higher School of Economics, Moscow, this Thursday. Dr. Natalia Slioussar works on a wide variety of topics in theoretical and experimental morphology and syntax, mainly on the material of Russian. For this talk, she has selected several recent and ongoing studies on production and processing of grammatical gender in Russian. Russian nouns come in three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter. In the absolute majority of cases, the gender cannot be unambiguously determined from the inflectional affix. It becomes evident in adjective and verb agreement. In this talk, Dr. Slioussar will show that the odds are not equal and can be considered at different levels, and will also explore different ways in which native speakers are sensitive to these distributional properties: in production and processing, dealing with nonce words and sensible sentences, starting from phonological properties and going up to the problem of finding words to describe female professionals in the language where many relevant words have originally been masculine.
