We would like to invite you to our next ARiEAL Brown Bag event! The idea behind the Brown Bag series is to provide our trainees and faculty members a casual setting where they can present and workshop their “work-in-progress” – thesis, dissertation, and book chapters, articles, or conference papers – for some constructive feedback from our team at ARiEAL.
Our next speaker is Dr. Anna Moro, the Associate Director of ARiEAL and an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University. Dr. Moro is also the director for McMaster English Language Development (MELD) program. This event will take place at LRW 4018 on Tuesday, 7 February, 2023, 12:30pm.
Abstract: In order to examine phonological similarity effects among university-aged bilinguals (L1 Mandarin or Cantonese) with modest proficiency in English, the Bilingualism Lab in ARiEAL developed a comprehensive rime judgment task, controlling for a variety of factors, e.g., frequency and phonological complexity. The discussion will primarily focus on task design (conditions and item selection), but preliminary findings from the auditory version of the task, as well as next steps (orthographic version), will also be discussed. Broader questions regarding the interpretation of sub-syllabic unit preferences (sensitivity to degree of phonological overlap) in bilingual phonologically processing will frame the overall discussion.
