The Linguistics of Arrival: Aliens, Fieldwork and Universal Grammar

Department of Linguistics and Languages will host a talk by Dr. Jessica Coon, an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at McGill University and Canada Research Chair in Syntax, on January 25, 2017. Dr. Coon received her doctorate from MIT, and her research is focused on syntax and morphology, especially of understudied languages of the Americas. She is also the science consultant on the recent film, Arrival. In this talk, Dr. Coon will address how human languages might differ from their hypothetical extraterrestrial counterparts, how human languages might be different from one another and whether these differences have bigger consequences for how we see the world.
