Dr. Michael Noseworthy, in his Master’s degree, developed novel MRI approaches to assess anaesthetic induced liver damage (1992). Subsequently he received a PhD (1996) specializing in applications of MRI/MRS and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) methods to assess free radical induced brain damage. From 1997-1999, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Imaging Physics, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre performing evaluation of tissue microvasculature through correlative MRI and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXS). From 1999-2003, Dr. Noseworthy was a MRI physicist at The Hospital for Sick Children and Assistant Professor in Medical Biophysics and Medical Imaging, University of Toronto. He moved to St. Joseph’s Healthcare in August 2003 and following 3 years as Assistant Professor (Radiology and Medical Physics) at McMaster, Dr. Noseworthy was appointed in Electrical & Computer Engineering, where he is now a full professor. In addition, he is Director of Imaging Physics and Engineering at the Imaging Research Centre, at St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton. Dr. Noseworthy was the Co-Director of the McMaster School of Biomedical Engineering for 10 years (2010-2020).
Dr. Noseworthy’s research interest is the assessment of tissue microstructure and metabolism using multimodal medical imaging. He focuses considerably on MRI and multinuclear in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. His work involves both imaging hardware and software development and more recently machine learning and deep learning. Dr. Noseworthy is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario (PEO) and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) and European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB).
Currently, Dr. Noseworthy’s lab is working on developing robust protocols for brain sodium (23Na) MRI and assessing spatial and temporal complexity of blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) brain MRI signals. They are also learning optimization of compressed sensing for undersampled MRI scanning and applying machine learning to evaluate structural and functional brain changes following injury.
